We planned a somewhat relaxed day after our fantastic trip to Magnetic Island (Maggie Isle). We walked from the beach through the forests and rocks towards Balding Bay and Radical Bay. It was a challenging hike uphill, but definitely worth it. Sweaty and tired, we enjoyed a refreshing breeze at Horseshoe Bay.
The next day, we had more on our agenda. During low tide, we left around eight o’clock to visit the famous shipwreck at Picnic Bay. A day ticket for the bus cost us $7.20, so we gladly took advantage of it. The distances on the island are too large to cover everything on foot. We still had to walk for a while when we arrived at Picnic Bay. It was only 9:30 AM, but the sun was already scorching. Every patch of shade was more than welcome, and we eagerly sought refuge in them. Spring had just begun here, and we wondered how hot the summers would get. After about twenty minutes, we reached the beach and saw the shipwreck in the distance. We just had to walk down the beach to get there. According to the locals, during low tide, you can even walk all the way to the shipwreck through the water.
We started our journey with high spirits, but soon it became challenging. Both literally and figuratively, our hearts sank. With each step, we sank deeper into the mud. At first, it wasn’t too bad, but as we walked further, it got worse. Eventually, we were sinking past our ankles in the mud. We were afraid of sinking deeper or falling, so we turned back. It was still a long walk, after all. It wasn’t the adventurous experience we had hoped for, but who cares?! We weren’t the only ones with the idea of walking along that muddy stretch. We struck up a conversation with an English couple, Lee and Hannah.
They offered us a ride and drove a little further to find another way to reach the shipwreck. We took the path toward the mangroves. We had to walk through a densely overgrown section of mangroves and thought we might encounter crocodiles. Fortunately, Hannah was adventurous enough, and she found a way. When we arrived, we saw the shipwreck up close in the water. We didn’t feel like walking through the water, so we enjoyed the beautiful view.
Back at the car, Lee and Hannah asked if we wanted to stroll through the market at Horseshoe Bay. It was a small but cozy market. We drank together at a charming bar and had the most delicious meal of the month. We shared a seafood platter, heavenly! We said our goodbyes and added each other on Facebook because we immediately felt a connection with them. Hopefully, we’ll meet again during our travels. We’ll stay in touch with them.
In the evening, we wanted to catch one last sunset. Lee and Hannah told us about a nice spot. We walked quite a distance at Picnic Bay and braved the rocks. We relaxed and enjoyed each other’s company with a stunning sunset as the backdrop. It was a perfect ending to our stay on Magnetic Island.
The next day, we were ready to leave for Airlie Beach.
