What a relief, landing after an 11-hour flight. Stretching our legs was definitely a good idea. Exiting the airport, we were pleased that our backpacks were forwarded to our next flight. We hurried through immigration and received our stamp to leave the airport. A quick stop at the red zone to declare my insulin was comical but smooth. My first step on Thai soil was a fact.
Inez had been here last year and told me a lot about the culture, different neighborhoods, the train network, and the food. We took the Sky Train from the airport to our hostel, which involved a transfer. It took a bit of figuring out, but it went smoother than expected, and an hour later, we arrived in Thong Lo. I was quickly overwhelmed by the busy traffic, the different culture, the tropical temperatures, and, most of all, by the abundance of street food. The temptation was strong because everything looked incredibly delicious, but we both knew that we had another 9-hour flight to Sydney in just 14 hours, and we wanted to go through it without stomachaches and diarrhea.
After walking around the main road for a bit, Inez remembered exactly where Rain Forest Guesthouse was located. She stayed here briefly last year. Once inside, we asked about our room, which was assigned to us at 18 euros for 1 night for 2 people, including breakfast. If that’s not cheap?! Since we weren’t staying until the following day, Inez asked if it was possible to have breakfast today and an hour later, we received our Thai breakfast: Toast with fried egg. Afterward, we crawled into bed for an uninterrupted sleep of 4 hours. We were really looking forward to it! A refreshing shower rejuvenated us; we checked out and took the Sky Train back to the airport. We quickly said no to rice dishes, Pad Thai, glazed duck, and other unknown items along the way.
During the boarding of our next flight, which we both dreaded, it quickly became clear that Australia had strict rules. Backpacks were rechecked, drinks purchased at the airport were discarded, and there was an insulin check where we were briefly separated. Once on the plane, Inez was delighted when no one sat next to us, and there was a free spot for us to lie down. Inez is a poor sleeper who needs her sleep, so I gave her the privilege of using the sleeping spot for the full 9 hours. Upon landing, I was told that I looked tired… “Really? No way?” 😀
It was a short stop in Thailand, but I will definitely be back. Especially for the food! Sydney, here we come!
